The REX came into last night’s doubleheader looking to get back into a groove against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp after splitting the road series with the Cape Catfish. Illinois Valley on the other hand was trying to turn their season around as they entered the night 2-7. It was also Adopt a Pet Night at Bob Warn Field with the Terre Haute Humane Society.
The first game of the doubleheader featured quite the pitching performance from new signee Braden Scott, a senior out of Indiana University. He threw a complete game shutout in seven innings as both games of doubleheaders are seven innings in the Prospect League. He had nine strike outs, zero walks, and only allowed two hits. The REX quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first when designated hitter Nate Wolf hit a two RBI single that scored shortstop Kody Putnam and first baseman Rob Weissheier. The REX crossed home plate again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Third baseman Clay Wisner scored right fielder Jack Leverenz on a single to give Wabash Valley’s Own an insurance run heading into the final inning. Scott continued his dominance on the mound and put the Pistol Shrimp down to secure the game one victory by a score of 3-0.
Game two started a little differently for the REX. The Pistol Shrimp crossed home plate twice in the first inning. Weissheier responded with a solo shot to pull the REX within one. The following inning, Wolf hit a solo home run of his own to tie the game at two. Wabash Valley’s Own took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on another home run. This time it was left fielder Alec Brunson who rounded the bases. It was his third home run of the season. The Pistol Shrimp bounced back in the top of the sixth with two runs crossing the plate to take the lead 4-3. The REX were unable to score again and fell to the Pistol Shrimp by a score of 4-3.
The REX are back in action on Tuesday, June 8, at Danville, IL to take on the Danville Dans at 7:30 PM EST.
