The REX entered last night hoping to extend their winning streak to three as they got ready to take on the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp. It was the first of four games in three days at Bob Warn Field this week. The REX had won seven of the last ten games.
The Pistol Shrimp took an early lead when they scored in the first. The REX stayed hot though as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Designated hitter Rob Weissheier continued his fast start to the season with a three-run home run. This was Weissheier’s third home run in three days. On the very next pitch, left fielder Alec Brunson hit one over the fence as well. The REX would not score again until the eighth. Meanwhile the Pistol Shrimp added eight more runs to take a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
Weisssheier came through again in the eighth when he hit a two RBI double to bring the REX within one. Brunson moved Weissheier over to third on a single. Then, first baseman Nate Wolf scored Weissheier on a sacrifice fly. The REX headed to the ninth down one. The defense was able to shut down the Pistol Shrimp in the top of the ninth, leading Wabash Valley’s Own to their final three outs. Weissheier struck again when he hit an RBI single to tie the game. Brunson came up next and hit the ball over the second baseman to score third baseman Kaleb Hannahs and walk it off for the REX!
The REX improved to 8-6 on the season after the 10-9 victory. Wabash Valley’s Own is back in action tonight at Bob Warn Field to take on the Lafayette Aviators at 6:30 PM EST. The three-game series is an important one as the Aviators currently lead the Wabash River Division and are two games ahead of the REX. Tonight, is also Science Fiction Night at the ballpark.
