Last night, the REX snapped a six-game losing streak when they defeated the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp. The much-needed win came after impressive outings from pitcher Braden Scott and first baseman Rob Weissheier. The REX took the lead over the Pistol Shrimp in the bottom of the third. Weissheier hit an RBI double that scored second baseman Alec Atkinson. Right fielder Nate Wolf followed that up with his own RBI double that scored Weissheier. The Pistol Shrimp were not able to get a run until the fifth inning due to Scott’s stellar performance. Scott went 5.2 innings and only allowed three hits and one run. He had seven strikeouts and only two walks. Wolf added another run in the bottom of the fifth when he scored third baseman Kaleb Hannahs.
In the bottom of the seventh, Weissheier continued his dominance of the Prospect League when he hit a home run over the left field wall to give the REX a 4-1 lead. Weissheier is now first in the league in home runs (8), third in batting average (.435), tied for sixth in RBI (21), tied for third in doubles (6), and second in slugging percentage (.919).
The Pistol Shrimp did their best to mount a comeback when they scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but the REX were able to hold on. Cole Whitlock was the winning pitcher and the save went to Kase Lawson. Assistant Coach Jacob Harden added this about the win, “It was great to see our guys come together tonight and get a win. Scott came out and pitched great and our bullpen was able to finish the job. Tonight, we got timely hits and put pressure on their defense all night. Our new motto is ‘0-0’ and focusing on making it ‘1-0.’ Tonight, our boys got the job done and we are 1-0. As soon as tomorrow hits, we’re 0-0 and its time to get back to work.”
The REX are back home tonight at 4:30 PM EST to take on the Chillicothe Paints on Sci Fi Night: Part Two.
