The REX took on the Champion City Kings last night in Springfield, OH. The REX were looking to start a win streak. The Kings were looking to extend their lead in the Ohio River Valley Division.
First baseman Rob Weissheier continued his campaign for Most Valuable Player of the Prospect League when he hit a two-run shot, his tenth home run of the season. The Kings took back the lead in the bottom of the first when they added three runs. In the second inning shortstop Kody Putnam doubled and scored catcher Kyle Harbison. In the same inning, right fielder Jack Leverenz scored on a passed ball. The Kings then tied it up at four in the bottom of the second. The REX took the lead back when Weissheier and left fielder Alec Brunson scored on a ground out by center fielder Tyler Nelson and an error by the Kings' first baseman. The Kings added a run in the bottom of the inning, but the REX still led after three innings 6-5.
The lead changed again in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Kings hit a two-run home run to give them a 7-6 lead. The REX responded again in the top of the seventh. This time Nelson and Harbison crossed home plate on a three-bagger by Leverenz. The Kings tied it up at eight in the bottom of the seventh. However, Wabash Valley’s Own would not go quietly into the night. In the top of the ninth, Nelson scored on a double by Harbison. Then, Harbison scored on an RBI by Putnam. Pitcher Alex Reinoehl put the Kings down in order in the bottom of the ninth and earned the win for the REX. The REX are now 11-14 on the season.
The REX are finishing up their road trip tonight against the Chillicothe Paints at 7:05 PM EST.
