Rowan sparks REX rally

The REX were in need of a win last night after a slow start to the second half of the season. They took on the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp for the first time this month. The Pistol Shrimp were looking to fend off the REX for last place in the division.

Wabash Valley's Own took an early 1-0 lead when third baseman Alec Brunson went deep for the tenth time this season. It was his sixth home run in the last eight games. He is now tied for third in home runs in the Prospect League. The Pistol Shrimp bounced back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. By the end of the third inning, the Pistol Shrimp had a 4-1 lead over the REX.

Things settled down over the next three innings before the REX were able to start their rally. Right fielder Jack Leverenz hit a single to right field, but was able to get third on an error. Left fielder Sammy Rowan came up to the plate and hit a no doubter over the left field wall to bring the REX within one. In the next inning, center fielder Tyler Nelson led off with a bomb of his own to tie the score at 4.

In the top of the ninth, the REX had runners on first and second with Nate Wolf up to bat. Wolf got his first hit of the night with a bloop single to left field that scored Alec Atkinson from second to give the REX a 5-4 lead. That score would hold and the REX would complete the comeback. Pitcher Cole Whitlock was credited with the win. The REX improved to 2-5 in the second half of the season.

The REX are back in action tonight in Springfield, OH to take on the Champion City Kings tonight at 6:35 PM EST!
